The Ludlows are your typical modern family … Not! Well, they’re a typical household of dad, mom, big sister and little brother. But most families don’t swim in technology the way the Ludlows do. It all starts with Dan (the dad) and his job as a technology reviewer for Tnet Online in San Francisco. Since Dan’s always bringing new tech gadgets home, the rest of the family gets to live the digital lifestyle ahead of the rest of the world.
Lexi is the 18-year-old heroine of TechToon, eldest child in the Ludlow family. Living in the technology capital of the world, San Francisco, she’s right at home being on the cutting edge. Lexi is a freshman at San Francisco State majoring in digital arts, living at home with her family. She plays piano (digital, of course), is on the staff of the student news website, loves sports (Wii boxing is her favorite), torments her little brother Marcus, has an assortment of friends (definitely not all tech geeks), gets along with her parents occasionally (she’s a normal teen), and loves all the cool stuff that Dad brings home. Dan has what may be the greatest job in the world: He reviews new technology and gadgets for Tnet Online, a major technology news website. Because he gets so much stuff from manufacturers to review and he can’t try it all out, he brings gadgets home for his family to test and live with. Now 45 years old, Dan was a major geek when he was Lexi’s age. But as he got older he managed to look up from his computer screen enough to marry Debbie and have two children, Lexi and Marcus. Dan’s not only a proficient writer, but also produces videos for Tnet’s website and TV channel, sometimes featuring his family. (Comics and blogs featuring Dan) ![]()
Debbie is a programmer at HexusNexus Corp., where she met Dan when he worked there (before becoming a technology reviewer for Tnet). She’s not as much of a gadget freak or tech nerd as Dan or Lexi, preferring to leave her work at the office. But she can’t escape the digital onslaught of incoming gadgets. She’d still prefer to curl up with a good paper book, and let Dan and Lexi use the Kindle e-book reader. She’d rather make her own cup of coffee than let the household robots do it. But Debbie knows the digital ropes, and isn’t afraid to text message when necessary to get her kids’ attention. (Comics and blogs featuring Debbie) ![]()
Lexi’s younger brother, Marcus, is 12 years old and uses technology to live life large — and occasionally to seek revenge on his sister for taunting him. He’s more adept than Lexi at coaxing his parents into actually buying the technology that he craves. His antics drive Lexi crazy, and she has little patience for his dreams of being a race car driver or rock star, reminding him that his music resembles a car crash and he is NOT Robert Plant. Marcus’ current favorite tech device is his Fisher Price I CAN PLAY WITH LED ZEPPELIN™ guitar and game cartridge. (Comics and blogs featuring Marcus) ![]()
Wikee is a techno-cat who has to fight hard to get computer time, but nevertheless feels right at home in such a tech-rich household. She gets frustrated with Lexi’s typical teen venacular and constant use of the word “like” — and edits Lexi’s blog, MySpace and Facebook pages when Lexi goes downstairs for food. Lexi says: “That’s strange, my blog always seems better after I get a snack.” Wikee wishes she could be an only pet, but has to put up with a Luddite dog and a know-it-all robot. This tech-phobic dog doesn’t like his name, Blogger, not understanding what it means, but he’s powerless to make people stopping calling him it. Blogger is on a mission to put a wrench in the Tech-Industrial-Complex. He has a “Tom and Jerry” relationship with Wikee and often gets double-teamed when Chip (Lexi’s robot) joins the game. Often the “game” turns into some techno-torture, usually giving Blogger the raw end. (Comics and blogs featuring Blogger) ![]()
Chip, aka Robobot CHP42-DA1, is the Ludlows’ primary home robot and Lexi’s artificial friend. He came home with Dan to be reviewed, but Lexi took an instant liking to Chip and begged that he be added as the third family pet. Seemingly just a toy, Chip actually is an astonishingly intelligent robotic being, as befits his lineage: “I am son of Mobiro of Toyota, brother of Aibo of Sony.” He was produced at WowWee Robotics, but Chip is far more advanced than his brethren there. One of Chip’s primary household roles is to spy for Lexi, and do the homework she doesn’t like. (Comics and blogs featuring Chip) ![]()
